Fahaz AK is a marine and energy technology professional with over 15 years of experience at ABB, spanning Engineering, technical project delivery & regional sales across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, India, Australia, and New Zealand. Based in Singapore, Fahaz currently leads regional sales initiatives for ABB's short-distance shipping segment, focusing on vessel electrification, propulsion systems, and shore charging infrastructure.

 

He has been directly involved in several first-of-a-kind projects for ABB, including the world's first maritime Megawatt Charging System (MCS) deployment for Auckland Transport's Mission Electric programme — one of the most significant milestones in ferry electrification globally.

 

His career at ABB spans technical project management, product responsibility for digital marine solutions including ABB Ability™ Remote Diagnosis System, cyber security, and marine advisory services — bridging deep engineering expertise with commercial strategy.

Lessons Learned from Deploying the World's First Marine Megawatt Charging System

Auckland Transport's (AT) Mission Electric programme represents a landmark in real-world ferry electri-fication. Working with ABB, AT deployed the world's first Megawatt Charging System (MCS) for ferries five charging installations across three Hauraki Gulf terminals (Halfmoon Bay, Hobsonville Point, and Downtown Ferry Terminal), each delivering 3.3MW of DC power via dual 1.65MW plugs. What sets Auck-land apart is not just scale, but complexity multiple ferry operators sharing common berths and charg-ing infrastructure within a live public transport network.

 

This presentation draws directly from design, installation, and commissioning experience, sharing key lessons on technical integration, communication protocol challenges, safety case development, and multi-operator interoperability. Built on the internationally standardized CharIN MCS protocol (ISO 15118-20) shared with heavy truck-ing and other transport sectors the Auckland deployment proves that open standards reduce operator lock-in, lower entry barriers, and enable multiple vessel types to charge from common port infrastruc-ture.

 

Beyond the technical achievement, Auckland sets a new commercial template: ports and operators collaborating on shared infrastructure to accelerate decarbonization fairly and efficiently. This presentation delivers practical guidance for ferry operators, port authorities, and infrastructure providers ready to take their next step in the energy transition.
