The future of Secure Maritime Electrification: MCS, Encrypted Communications, Smart/Dynamic Charging, and V2G Integration

CharIN is the Association that developed the international battery charging standards for EV: ISO15118-20, CCS (Combined Charging System), MCS (Megawatt Charging System). Those Battery Charging/discharging standards are used for land transport, mining, marine & aviation industry. MegaWatt Charging Systems (MCS) represent a transformative solution for powering electric vessels (E-Vessels) and supporting Terminal infrastructure in an era of sustainable maritime innovation.

 

As the maritime industry shifts toward decarbonization, MCS provides a robust, efficient, and interoperable framework to electrify E-Vessels and Docking infrastructure, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and minimizing emissions. Designed to meet the unique demands of marine environments, MCS integrates high charging levels up to 6MW combined with the ISO15118-20 communication protocol which allows for interoperable & safe charging of harbour infrastructure, provide energy delivery to a wide range of E-Vessels, from Ferries and Tugboats to Supply vessels. In addition during charging sessions the ISO15118-20 communication protocol is encrypted at all times to protect critical strategic E-harbour infrastructure & E-Vessels from unwanted interference.

 

Besides high power charging MCS, also provides smart energy management to optimize charging times and ensure operational efficiency. It supports both overnight charging for docked vessels and rapid top-ups during brief docking calls, catering to diverse maritime schedules. Beyond E-Vessels, MCS enhances Terminal infrastructure by powering E-Trucks, Supply equipment, Passenger EV, etc. creating a fully electrified ecosystem. With modular designs and compatibility with renewable energy sources (solar, wind), MCS offers flexibility for terminals of all sizes. By facilitating clean energy adoption, MCS not only lowers operational costs but also aligns with global environmental regulations, paving the way for a greener, more sustainable maritime future.
